Local 6950 Executive Board Statement Regarding Temporary Ban on Muslims Traveling to US

The Executive Order signed by Donald Trump on January 27th, 2017, temporarily banning refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, adversely impacts UConn. Many of the individuals affected by this ban are members of our community. They are undergraduate students, GAs, TAs, staff, faculty, and instructors. They travel abroad to conduct field work, attend conferences, and visit family. This ban tears their families apart, disrupts their access to work and study, and affects their ability to teach and engage in research. We believe that cultural diversity is one of the strengths of our UConn Community. The Executive Board of the GEU-UAW Local 6950 in a Statement condemns this selective, racist, and Islamophobic ban, and 1) calls upon the University Administrators to provide immediate support to those affected by this ban; 2) encourages members of the Community to attend a student-organized rally planned for 02/01/2017 at 2:30pm behind the Student Union; and 3) strongly urges all those affected by this ban, or otherwise experiencing discrimination, threats, and harassment to to contact us immediately.
